Govt considering building ropeways on Amarnath Yatra route

The government today said it is considering building ropeways on the Amarnath Yatra route connecting Pahalgam with the cave shrine high up in Kashmir Himalayas.

Replying to a calling attention motion in the Rajya Sabha by Prakash Javdekar of BJP on inadequate facilities and safety measures along the Amarnath Yatra route resulting in deaths of pilgrims, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the committee appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the problems faced by pilgrims and suggest measures for improvement of facilities would submit its report by September-end. shrine this year, the Home Minister Centre will extend all possible cooperation to the Jammu and Kashmir government in making the arrangements for the pilgrims of Amarnath Yatra. Giving details of the facilities by the government he said 26 medical camps had been set up en route this year and 83 doctors in addition to paramedical staff were on duty. There were also 36 ambulances. Besides, 85 companies of security forces had been deployed.

Initiating the debate on the motion, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said the Yatra was associated with the religious sentiments of people. He said the Government should ensure setting up of permanent facilities for pilgrimsgoing on the Amarnath yatra every year.
