The Prime Minister has reiterated government's commitment to women empowerment. Addressing a function in New Delhi yesterday, Dr. Manmohan Singh said the government is moving towards providing 1/3rd reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. He said, the number of reserved seats in Panchayats and urban bodies is also being increased for which constitutional amendment bill has been introduced in the Parliament. He said, this will give an impetus to political empowerment of women. Dr. Singh said that women have been the special focus of the government and no effort will be spared to empower them in the social, economic and political fields. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha Mrs. Meira Kumar said that 96 percent of women are engaged in the unorganized sectors.
