'Govt committed to safety of African nationals in India: Sushma Swaraj

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has assured African Missions in India that Government is committed to the safety and security of African nationals in India. In a series of tweets, Mrs Swaraj said, she has asked Minister of State for External Affairs General V.K.Singh to meet the heads of missions of African countries in Delhi. <br/><br/>She added that General Singh will also hold meetings with African students in metro cities to assure them of their safety and security. Mrs Swaraj said, her Ministry will request State Governments to depute Commissioners of Police in all such meetings. The Minister said, the External Affairs Ministry will also launch a sensitization program to reiterate that such incidents against foreign nationals embarrass the country. <br/><br/>The Minister said, When she came to know about the unfortunate killing of a Congo national in Delhi, her Ministry directed for stringent action against the culprits. She also assured African students in India that this an unfortunate and painful incident involving local goons. Mrs Swaraj said, she has already asked the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to take steps and ensure that this case is tried by a Fast Track Court.<br/><br/>The Minister's comments came after African diplomatic community decided to stay away from this year's Africa Day celebrations in protest over the murder of a Congolese national in the capital and other attacks and harassment of African students and others in various parts of the country. The Missions have also sought strong action on the part of the government. <br/><br/>External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup condemned the death of the post-graduate African student in Delhi in an attack and described the incident as unfortunate. Talking to media, he said, Ministry will ensure that justice is done and stringent punishment given to those involved in the attack. He said Secretary (Economic Relations) Amar Sinha, who handles relations with Africa, met some African Heads of Missions and explained that two suspects been arrested and one is on run.
