Govt committed to protect consumers' interests: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that the government is committed to protect and promote the interest of consumers. Addressing an international conference on health and safety aspects of Mobile Telecommunication in New Delhi today, Mr Prasad said, his Ministry is keeping a eye on issues of health including radiation. He said radiation level of mobile towers is still in the realm of ambiguity and there should be more information regarding this on the public domain.The Minister said, mobile is not a simple device to communicate but a device of empowerment. He said people with a simple click of mobile opened 13 million bank accounts in a single day during the launch of Jan Dhan Yojana. Mr Prasad said, government is committed to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban India. He added that digital India programme will be a game changer and it will be focused on poor and under privileged. The Minister said if the country is digitally more connected, it will have a big impact upon the economy and GDP. He said government will connect all villages of India through broadband in the next five years. He also stressed on e-education, e-health, e-commerce saying it has enormous scope in the country. Mr Prasad said through National Optical Fiber Network 15000 cluster of villages will be connected this year. He said government is promoting digital literacy to people through its common service centres.
