Govt. committed to modernize Indian Navy: Prez Patil

The President, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil has said that the Government remains committed to the process of modernizing the Indian Navy in keeping with the changing requirements of the 21st century. She was speaking on board the Indian Navy's lone aircraft carrier INS Viraat, anchored at the Western Naval Headquarters in Mumbai today. The President added that the Indian Navy and other stakeholders in maritime domain are playing a pro-active role to avoid a recurrence of 26/11 type terror attacks. Mrs. Patil said, many new ships and submarines are being acquired while some of them are being built indigenously to help transform the Navy into an even more reckonable force. The President also lauded the efforts of the Navy in Gulf of Eden that have instilled confidence in the shipping industry against pirates. Earlier, President Patil, the supreme commander of the armed forces, witnessed various naval ships that steamed past Viraat and paid honours to her. There was also a demonstration by 'Sea King' helicopters and 'Sea Harrier' aircraft, followed by a breathtaking fly-past.
