Govt committed to environment sustainability

India is committed to environment sustainability and it has taken many steps in this direction.

Addressing a function in New Delhi today, Environment Minister Jayanti Natrajan said the government has already announced a domestic mitigation goal of reducing the emissions intensity of its output by 20 to 25 percent by the year 2020 in comparison with 2005 level.

She said this goal is relative in nature and allows India’s emissions to grow as the economy grows. Mrs. Natrajan said India and other developing countries have done far more in the direction of climate change in comparison to developed nations.

Highlighting the outcome of Durban Climate Change Conference, the minister said setting up the Green Climate Fund and the establishment of the second commitment period for the developed countries that are Party to Kyoto Protocol are two major achievements of the conference.

She said India has followed a clear and compassionate strategy towards the climate change negotiations and the matters have always been based on equity and the principle of common but differentiated responsibility.
