Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said that the Government is committed to ensure transparency in delivery of public services at local level. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to completely eradicate corruption from the system.
Mr Mukherjee was addressing the valedictory function on the completion of 150 years of Comptroller and Auditor General, C&AG of India in New Delhi. Lauding the role of C&AG in ensuring transparency and accountability, Mr Mukherjee stressed the need for close cooperation between the Finance Ministry and C&AG for promoting good governance. Mr Mukherjee said, the government is seriously considering amendments in the 1971 Act regarding the duties and powers of the C&AG to make it more effective. He also emphasized the need for better and strong audit practices within the government to compliment the working of C&AG.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Murli Manohar Joshi said that C&AG has a major responsibility in ensuring that taxpayer’s money and national assets are managed judiciously. Mr Joshi also lauded Finance Minister’s support to C&AG and said that this will help in infusing confidence in such institutions.
Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai appreciated the government’s initiative to strengthen public audit arrangements in various flagship schemes including MGNREGA. Mr Rai said, this will enhance transparency and provide assurance to all stakeholders about the efficacy of programmes along with ensuring that benefits of growth are widely spread and adequately shared.
