Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee says that Government is committed to achieve the budget targets in the current financial year and efforts to get the economy on a path of fiscal prudence are on track. Addressing the Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry in New Delhi, Mr Mukherjee said that the fiscal deficit touched 4.7 percent of the GDP in 2010-11, way below the revised estimate of 5.1 percent. The Minister also emphasized the need for regular monitoring and evaluation of public expenditure to ensure that public money is spent productively. The need to prevent leakages in public spending of money with regard to implementation of various Centrally sponsored schemes such as MNREGA and Indira Aawas Yojna was also discussed during the meeting. The Members of the Committee also called for better coordination between Centre and States to improve the quality of expenditure while implementing Central Government sponsored schemes.
