Government has cleared the purchase of four American P81 long range maritime surveillance aircraft. The Defence Acquisition Council headed by the Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony also decided to build four amphibious warships indigenously with a foreign collaborator. AIR correspondent reports that the deals are valued at more than 22,500 crore rupees. The P-81 deal, worth 4,500 crore rupees will be a follow-on order to the eight such aircraft already contracted by India for 9,000 crore rupees. The amphibious warships or landing ship tanks, to be built in partnership with a foreign collaborator, will cost around 18,000 crore rupees.
