Govt can accepts few amendments not 187 says Chidambaram

Home Minister P Chidambaram says, the government can accept one or two amendments to rope in the ally's support for passage of Lokpal Bill in Budget session.

Admitting that the government was taken by surprise by Trinamool Congress' opposition to Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, Chidambaram defended the deferment of Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill, 2011 in Rajya Sabha on last Thursday. He told news persons in Mumbai today that it was the only prudent course before the government to ensure that the Bill remains alive.

He continued attack on BJP saying that it has devised an ingenious method to scuttle it by pushing 187 amendments along with some other parties. He said the government thought that it had convinced Trinamool Congress after redrafting a provision. But it was not so. He said it is confident that between now and Budget session it will refine or redraft the provision and carry Trinamool along with it. He said, a provision may be redrafted to accommodate Trinamool Congress. It will be the same bill, with one or two amendments. He rejected accepting 187 amendments, which will make it unrecognisable bill.
