Govt calls for shifting some agriculture workers to the manufacturing sector

Government on Monday called for shifting a part of agriculture workers to the manufacturing sector, to boost the country's economic growth.Agriculture Secretary P K Basu said in New Delhi that currently about 60 per cent of the country's 1.2 billion population is involved in agriculture and allied activities for their livelihood.He said that time has come now to take some population working in the agriculture sector and train them for the manufacturing sector.Mr. Basu said that the growth in the farm production is on rise. It has bolstered by successful schemes such as Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yajana.However, the pace of economic growth could pick up with implementation of the National Manufacturing Policy.The Policy, which the Cabinet cleared in October 2011, seeks to set up mega industrial zones and create 100 million jobs by 2022. Mr. Basu also said that his ministry is confident of producing a record foodgrains of 245 million tonnes in the 2011-12 crop year.
