Govt asks officials to carry out aggressive campaigns to end Black Fever

The Union Health Ministry has asked officials to carry out aggressive campaigns to meet the target of eliminating Kala Azar, also known as Black Fever in endemic districts. Health Minister JP Nadda reviewed national programmes for leprosy and Kala Azar in New Delhi yesterday. <br/><br/>In a release, the Ministry said, Mr Nadda has directed officials to work in close coordination with the states and review the progress made by the states in the next three months. It said, a leprosy case detection drive, which is presently being undertaken in 50 endemic districts of various states, will be expanded to 163 districts. <br/><br/>The Ministry said, more than 60,000 new cases were detected through this aggressive detection drive. Mr Nadda said, an expert committee will be formed under the Chairmanship of Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research which will recommend introduction of Mycobacterium Indicus Pranii (MIP) vaccine in high leprosy endemic states.
