Govt asks CDMA operators to pay Rs 3,033 crore one-time fee

The Department of Telecom, DoT, has asked CDMA telecom operators to pay one-time spectrum fee.This charge has been levied on the operators for the spectrum they hold beyond the initial frequencies that were allotted to them.The DoT in its order has said the charges for holding spectrum above 2.5 Mhz in the 800 Mhz band shall be applicable from first of January this year. As per the order, the charges will be levied on additional spectrum for the rest of the licence period.Operators not willing to pay these charges will be allowed to surrender their spectrum held over 2.5 Mhz.The one-time spectrum fee on all CDMA players cumulatively amounts to around Rs. 3,033 crore.
