The Standing Committee of Parliament on Law and justice has said that the Women's Reservation Bill providing for one third of the seats in Lok Sabha and State assemblies should be passed by Parliament without any dilution and without further delay. The report was presented in Parliament yesterday. The Chairman of the Committee Mrs Jayanthi Natrajan said that except for the two members who gave a dissent note the parliamentary panel felt that any dilution in the bill is not called for at this juncture.

AIR correspondent reports, It was September 1996 that the women reservation Bill was first introduced in Lok Sabha and though it had been introduced several times after that it could not be passed because of lack of political consensus.

The UPA government in its first stint re introduced the bill Rajya Sabha last year which was referred to the standing committee of Parliament and now the parliamentary panel has opined that any further delay in the enactment of the bill will only hamper the process political empowerment of women and strongly feels that bill should be passed without wasting any more time and put in action. Hopefully the bill which has been lying in the cold storage for 13 years will finally see the light of the day.
