Govt asked to bring in new legislation or modify Prasar Bharati Act without any further delay

A Parliamentary Committee has asked the government to bring in a new legislation or modify the existing Prasar Bharati Act without any further delay. In a report tabled in Parliament today, the Standing Committee on Information Technology expressed serious concern over the non-implementation of important provisions of the Prasar Bharati Act of 1990.It also strongly recommended that the provisions of the Act should be reviewed comprehensively after addressing the concerns expressed by the panel in its various reports. The Standing Committee has been consistently recommending organizational and financial re-structuring of Prasar Bharati. It said the Information and Broadcasting ministry had given assurances to finalize the proposals by 30th of September this year and place them before the GoM but till date, this has not been done. The Committee has strongly emphasized the need for Prasar Bharati to find out ways and means to mobilize funds to reduce dependence on Government's grants to meet the operational costs. The Parliamentary panel said that as desired by the GoM the number of deputation posts in Prasar Bharati Corporation to be manned by officers from Indian Information Service and other service cadres outside Akashawani and Doordarshan should be worked out expeditiously by the ministry and Prasar Bharati.
