The Cabinet has given its approval for raising two additional battalions for the National Disaster Response Force, NDRF. Two battalions one each from Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force, CRPF will be upgraded and converted into National Disaster Response Force. Nearly 1150 personnel each of these two forces will be located at Patna in Bihar and Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh. AIR correspondent says that the placement of these two battalions will cut short the response time for immediate intervention by NDRF battalions in the event of Disasters situation like floods, cyclones and earthquakes. With these two additional battalions the strength of NDRF will rise to ten battalions from the present eight. The NDRF is a multi-disciplinary, multi-skilled and high-tech Force capable of effectively responding to all types of disasters. The force also prepares the community to mitigate the suffering from disasters by giving training during the course of their regular familiarization and community awareness programmes.
