Government has approved export of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar for the current season in Open General License category. A decision to this effect was taken by the EGOM on agriculture in New Delhi today.The meeting was chaired by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Talking to reporters after the meeting the consumer affairs minister K V Thomas said that the Committee also decided to release 23.68 lakh tones of rice and wheat under PDS.Out of this 16.08 lakh tonnes are for Below Poverty Line people and the remaining for the above poverty line. He added that stock holding limit of sugar has been removed. He elaborated that the stock holding limit of rice has also been lifted except for the states who had requested not to lift it. These states include Tamil Nadu.Replying a question on the impact of sugar export on price rise, he said that it will not have any impact, as there is enough quantity available. He added there was a demand of 30 lakh tonnes and government has just decided to permit export of 10 lakh tonnes.
