The government today appealed to the private sector to spend more on Research and Development (R&D) activities. Responding to questions in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Science and Technology Prithviraj Chavan said at present the government spends one per cent of its GDP on research and development. He said the proposal to double the quantum has been stalled on account of global economic recession. Replying to another question, the Minister said the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library developed by India, has been appreciated world over. He said the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is playing a major role in the scientific research and development activities since its inception. He said all the 37 laboratories of CSIR are doing the frontline research work in various sectors.<br/>
