Government has announced the demerger of the National Institute of Sports, NIS, Patiala from Sports Authority of India, SAI, aimed at reviving the academic character of the Institute. The move would ensure NIS, Patiala emerge as an Institution of National Improtance. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Sports Minister Ajay Maken said a cabinet note will be moved for introducing a bill to this effect in the winter session of Parliament.The Minister also issued an ultimatum to Hockey India and Indian Hockey Federation to merge by July 25 failing which he warned the Sports Ministry will take a decision on its own.
