Govt. announces comprehensive package for Bhopal gas victims

The Government has announced a comprehensive package for Bhopal gas victims. The Union Cabinet which met this evening in New Delhi accepted the recommendations of the GoM in this regard. <br/><br/>Giving details of the package the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni told reporters that those who have lost their lives in the tragedy will get an ex-gratia of 10 lakh rupees and those who are permanently disabled will get five lakh rupees. <br/><br/>Mrs. Soni said that cancer patients and those suffering from renal failure will get two lakh rupees each and one lakh rupees has been ear-marked for each person who is temporarily disabled. Mrs. Soni said that 45,000 people will be covered under the ex-gratia payment. <br/><br/>She said that the government will file a curative petition in the Supreme Court to seek reversal of the earlier order of the Apex court in 1996 which is said to have diluted charges against the accused. She said that the government will pursue to explore the possibility of seeking extradition of former Union Carbide Chief Warren Anderson.
