As part of its initiative to improve transport infrastructure in the north-east, the DoNER Ministry has announced allocation of 916 crore rupees to improve a major road in upper Assam. DoNER Minister B K Handique said in New Delhi that the money will be spent on the 212 km-long road Dodar Ali from Kumargaon to Joypur. The work on the project will commence from October. The Dodar Ali has a lot of historical significance as it was built during the Ahom dynasty. The road connects five districts of Upper Assam — Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.Mr.Handique also reviewed the progress of the broad gauge conversion of the Lumding – Silchar – Jiribam railway line. The Centre last year had announced an ambitious project for linking all capital cities in the Northeastern States with railway network at an estimated investment of 17,000 crore rupees by the year 2016.
