The government has allowed export of one million tonnes of non-basmati rice through private trade. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, DGFT has issued a formal notification in this regard. It said that the export will be subject to the minimum export price of 400 dollars per tonne.The Empowered Group of Ministers on food, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, had decided to lift the over three-year old ban on non-basmati rice on 11th of this month. The ban was imposed in April 2008 to check inflation.The rice production in the country increased to 95.32 million tonnes in 2010-11 crop year as against 89.09 million tonnes in the previous year.
