Govt aims to increase food grain buffer stock for two years

The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prof K V Thomas says the government's aim is to increase the food grain buffer stock in the country that will last up to two years.

Addressing a press conference in Kochi today, Prof Thomas said the 63,000 crore rupee subsidy component in the Targetted Public Distribution System is expected to go up to 90,000 crore rupees with the implementation of the Food Security Bill.

The Union Minister said he will soon meet the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to sort out the state's reservations with regard to the Food Security Bill. He said 4000 crore has been earmarked for end to end computerisation of the food distribution system in the country.

Prof Thomas said he was of the view that the Kochi Metro Rail project should be executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation with the support of its former chief, E Sridharan . He said Planning Commission Vice Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia is expected to visit Kochi on the 11th and 12th of this month.
