Govt aims to double food processing levels to 20%

Union Minister for Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said that the government aims to double food processing levels by the end of its five-year term. Inaugurating an international Exhibition,"Annapoorna – World of Food 2016' in Mumbai, Ms. Kaur said food processing will largely help farmers and provide a large number of employment opportunities.Pointing out that food processing is a sunrise sector, ready for exponential growth, Ms. Kaur informed that India currently processes only 10 per cent of its produce. Emphasizing that zero tolerance is required towards food wastage, the minister said infrastructure development focusing on minimizing wastage is the need of the hour. Ms. Kaur informed that the government has taken a number of steps like offering subsidies to set up food parks and cold storage facilities, offering cheap credit for food processing units and reduction in excise duties to boost up the sector. Ms. Kaur further said that her ministry is planning to conduct a World Food festival in March next year, to showcase the entire farm-to-fork process. She added that the new FDI policy in multi-brand food retail will be advertised and top companies will be invited to do business in India.
