The government has envisaged a long term National Dairy Plan, aimed at increasing milk production in the country. The domestic demand for milk is projected at about 180 million tonnes by 2020. The share of the organized sector is expected to increase from the current 30 per cent to about 65 per cent of total marketable surplus of milk. Official sources said in New Delhi that the main components of the proposed plan include production of high genetic merit bulls, veterinary health care, village milk procurement systems and expansion of infrastructure for milk processing and marketing. AIR Correspondent reports that price of milk was increased two to six times by dairies in four metro cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai during the last three years. The increase in Delhi was six times from 18 rupees per litre in July 2007 to 24 rupees in July 2010.
