Govt. aiming for 50 % reduction in consumption of petroleum products

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dr M Veerappa Moily has called for auditing of all energy sources, including petroleum products in the country. Inaugurating the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight-2013 in New Delhi today, Dr Moily said the energy audit should have exact and precise process. It should encompass all sectors as utilization of national resources on sustainable basis need to be a top priority. He asked the Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA) to scale up its activities for intensifying conservation and optimum utilization of oil and gas. He also suggested energy budgeting by everyone utilizing energy. The Petroleum Minister said the government is working on a proposal for 50 per cent reduction in the consumption of petroleum products by 2020 and make the country self reliant by the year 2035. He said energy auditing is needed to find out the quantum of unproductive and wasteful energy sources. Dr Moily, who administered a pledge to several students at the functionso that they educate people on how to make use of scarce energy resources. He suggested that the concept of conservation of energy sources should be a part of students curriculum. The Minister also launched a programme in which PCRA fuel saving tips will be made available to the people on their mobile phones. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Mrs Panabaka Laskshmi emphasized the need for efficient use of scarce national resources. She suggested that PCRA should have intensive fuel conservation awareness campaign to every household in local languages. Earlier, both the Ministers gave away conservation awards to the winners in various categories and students who participated in the essay writing and painting competition on fuel conservation. They also flagged off publicity vans carrying messages and literature.
