Govt actively considering to enact law to tackle honour killings

The government is actively considering to enact a law to tackle honour killings. The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Maken in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha said that there is no proposal to amend the Hindu Marriage Act. The Minister said his ministry had sent a detailed advisory in September 2009 to all the states and union territories asking them to take appropriate measures to curb honour killings. He added that the basic responsibility for prevention or punishment of honour killings was with the state governments.
