Government to move cautiously on river interlinking says PM

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that government will move cautiously on interlinking of rivers keeping in mind environmental and ecological concerns. He, however added that the interlinking of river system is something which can help in expanding area under irrigation. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in the capital, Dr Singh said, there are divergent views among experts in the field on how far interlinking of rivers can help provide water security to the people.<br/><br/>He was replying to a question on interlinking of rivers against the backdrop of spells of droughts and floods in the country. Referring to the Ken-Betwa river link between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh which is almost ready, Dr Singh informed that two or three projects are under preparation.
