Government to define honor killings

The government today said it is in the process of defining honor killing and to see how it can be incorporated as a separate offence.<br/><br/>Replying to the question on the alleged tyranny of caste Panchayats, in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that this will however take some time.<br/><br/>He also informed the members that the government is examining the proposal to broaden the ambit of crimes related to sexual assault by making them gender neutral. He said a high powered committee was set up to examine the issue.<br/><br/>Mr. Chidambaram however made it very clear that this is not to dilute in any way the law related to the crime of rape. Our correspondent says that latest data shows that over two lakh women were victims of sexual crimes between 2006 and 2008.<br/><br/>While more than 61 thousand five hundred and fifty cases of rapes were registered during the period, number of child rapes has also gone up from 4721 in 2006 to 5446 in 2008.
