Government in a state of maximum alert: Naoto Kan

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan today said his government is in a state of maximum alert over the crisis at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant. Mr Kan told a lower house budget committee meeting that the situation continues to be unpredictable and that the Japanese government will tackle the problem. Radiation worries have disrupted efforts to restart the cooling system of the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Plutonium has been detected in soil at the facility northeast of Tokyo and highly contaminated water has leaked from a reactor building. Nearby seawater has also shown radioactive high iodine readings. Japan was hit by a 9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami on the 11th of this month in which more than 28,000 people died or were reported missing.Meanwhile, China's National Nuclear Emergency Coordination Committee said extremely low levels of radioactive material have been detected in southeastern coastal areas but the radiation of these levels will not affect public health or the environment. Earlier South Korea too had reported low levels of radio active iodine.
