Indian national Gopal Dass, who has spent nearly 27 years in the Lahore Central Jail, will be a free man today. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu said Gopal Das will be repatriated to his country through the Attari land border in Amritsar by the Pakistani government today. He said the district administration had informed the family of Dass about his repatriation. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had remitted the remaining jail term of Dass on humanitarian grounds last month following an appeal by the Indian Supreme Court. Mr Dass had crossed over to Pakistan inadvertently and was arrested on charges of spying. The Indian was sentenced to life imprisonment and was set to be released by the end of this year.
