GoM discusses measures to tackle corruption

A ministerial panel considered a variety of steps like scrapping of discretionary powers of ministers and the need for a probe agency to seek government nod before launching an inquiry against a senior official.The Group of Ministers on tackling corruption, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, met in New Delhi yesterday for over an hour and is understood to have favoured fast-tracking of all cases of corruption in which public servants are accused.Department of Personnel and Training had last month written to all ministries asking them to provide details of discretionary powers enjoyed by the ministers.It had also sought details of the instances in which such powers were used by the ministers and senior functionaries of the ministries. The GoM, which will also suggest administrative actions to tackle corruption and improve transparency, has been asked to submit its recommendations by 6th March. Home Minister P Chidambaram, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Defence Minister A K Antony and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the meeting.
