Vice President Hamid Ansari today said golden jubilee commemoration of 1965 Indo-Pak War is a befitting tribute to gallantry and sacrifice of soldiers. Delivering inaugural address at the Tri-Services Seminar to commemorate the Golden Jubilee commemoration, Mr Ansari said it is also an occasion to introspect and to draw lessons from the experience undergone.

He said it was Pakistan's obduracy and fallacious belief that it could alter geography and political realities of the sub-continent which led to the war. The Vice President also said the war was a costly military and political misadventure for Pakistan. He praised country's political leadership, led by then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, for responding with vigor and determination to Pakistan's advances.

Addressing the seminar Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, the security environment today is complex and nuanced as compared to earlier time. He said, there is a need to be more vigilant taking into account all dimensions so that emerging challenges are suitably addressed. He also recalled listening to AIR reports on 1965 war as a nine year old kid. The Minister said, the saga of valour and gallantry of the Servicemen should be part of school curriculum.

Speaking at the seminar, Army Chief General Dalbir Singh stressed on preparedness of the Armed Forces at all times for short wars, given the frequent ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the border. He expressed concern about the new methods used by Pakistan to keep Jammu and Kashmir on the boil.

There has been a surge in border firings in recent months. There were 55 violations in August of the 2003 ceasefire agreement between the two countries and there have been over 245 incidents this year.
