Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi may submit his resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi today. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr Gogoi said, he has sought an appointment to meet Mrs Gandhi today and if he gets it, he will submit his papers.
He said, he will relinquish his post taking moral responsibility for the poll debacle in the state. He said, communal polarisation was behind the party's rout.
Mr Gogoi, however, said he does not know whether Mrs Gandhi will accept his resignation or not as he has not spoken to her yet. Responding to a media query on why he did not submit his resignation to the Governor, he said it is the party tradition to submit the resignation letter to the Congress President.
Our correspondent reports that speculation is rife on the resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi after the poll debacle of Congress party in Assam. With this, political activities of the state have geared up in New Delhi.
Political experts said, Gogoi who is ruling the state for the last 13 years, may find it difficult to pacify his legislators. Though the Chief Minister and other senior leaders have denied the dissidence factor, around 40 legislators have sought the Congress High Command’s intervention to strengthen the party.
This group is believed to be in favour of holding a Congress Legislative Party meet. On the other hand, some party leaders have extended support to Tarun Gogoi. Several ministers, close to the Chief Minister are camping in Delhi to take stock of the situation.
