Gogoi briefs PM about Assam situation

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in violence-hit Kokrajhar today to take stock of the situation. He was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Dr. Singh visited relief camps and also met the inmates. Gogoi briefed Dr. Singh on the overall situation in the affected areas and relief works being undertaken.

Large-scale violence, which has rocked the state, particularly Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, has claimed 50 lives so far. Another 57 people sustained injuries while 10 are still reported missing.

Gogoi has said that the violence displaced around 4 lakh people in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts.

Earlier, the Prime Minister's helicopter returned midway to Guwahati from a flight to strife-torn Kokrajhar district due to a technical problem. Official sources said the helicopter returned 15 minutes after take off from the Lokopriyo Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati
