In Goa, all the political parties are running their campaigns in full swing ahead of the State Assembly polls slated on March 3. The election rallies of prominent leaders of various political parties are being held in different constituencies. There are 215 candidates in the fray for a total of 40 seats locked mostly in the multi-cornered contests. Our correspondent reports that among the 20 Assembly constituencies of North Goa, the Saligao constituency has the record ten candidates including six independents while there is a direct fight between the Congress and BJP candidates in Sanquelim and Poriem constituency. Assembly Speaker Mr. Pratapsingh Rane is in the electoral contest from Poriem and Leader of the Opposition Mr. Manohar Parrikar has been engaged in the electoral battle with the Mayor of the capital city Mr.Yatin Parekh. Former Chief Minister Dr. Wilfred D’souza representing Trinamool Congress, which is making a maiden foray in the state, faces a stiff fight from Mr. Dayanand Narvekar of Congress and Mr. Ticlo De’souza of BJP in Aldona. The Ministers Mr. Manohar Ajgoankar in Pernem (SC), Mr. Nilkanth Halarnkar of NCP in Tivim, Mr. Atanasio Monserrate in Santa Cruz and Mr. Vishwajit Rane in Valpoi would be trying to retain the seat while Mandrem and Bicholim constituencies would also attract attention as the two BJP dissidents are contesting with their erstwhile party colleagues.
