Goa govt hikes minimum wages of over three lakh workers

The Goa government today hiked minimum wages of over three lakh unskilled and semi skilled workers in the state from existing 103 rupees to 150 rupees at a meeting of the State Minimum Wage Board held in the secretariat at Panaji under the chairmanship of the Labour Minister Mr. Joaquim Alemao. The hike comes into effect from December 24, 2009 and the workers will be paid arrears from retrospective effect, said Mr. Alemao briefing reporters after the meeting. Earlier the hike was effected on March 15,2007.<br/><br/>In the meanwhile the All India Trade Union Congress leader Mr. Christopher Fonseca has expressed his displeasure over the hike and said taking into consideration the inflation, the hike in the minimum wages of workers in the state bears no meaning.
