Global leaders, ICT experts express concern at growing threat to internet world

The global leaders and ICT experts have expressed concern at the growing threat to the internet world. Cyber security is in focus at the ongoing International Telecom Union Conference, ITU -2012 in Dubai.

Telecom and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal has underlined the need to protect the security of the networks as per globally accepted standards. Mr. Sibal will be addressing a panel discussion on growing threats to the cyber world at the ITU conference today.

The digital revolution has led to smart applications, ease in the big data management, its use as a cost effective and efficient tool in healthcare and education sectors as a boon for the masses. At the same time, it has thrown up new challenges in the cyberspace.

These include hacking by a series of computer worms and trojan viruses which can steal, manipulate or even fudge the all important data crippling a nation’s security and economy.

The discovery of computer viruses in the cyber space from the worm StuxNet and Duqu to the Trojan Flame and now Shamoon have exposed the threats of a cyber warfare and the need to counter it.

These issues will be in focus at a panel discussion on “Breaking the Silence on Cyber-Warfare : Wars Without Declarations” today.

The Telecom and ICT Minister Kapil Sibal has already called for a consensus on globally accepted standard norms of accountability which could take on the threats of cyber terrorism as well.
