Global conclave on climate change begins in Copenhagen; no compromise on India's interest at summit, says Jairam Ramesh

The crucial summit on climate change opened on Monday at Copenhagen with a call for early action to combat the threat. Danish Prime Minister L. L. Rasmussen has described the UN climate summit as an opportunity the world cannot afford to miss.Opening the two-week conference in the Danish capital, he told delegates from 192 countries that a strong and ambitious climate change agreement is the need of the hour.Negotiators from about 100 countries are participating in the first round of discussions to prepare a draft for the ministerial level meeting. Observers believe that there is an unprecedented political momentum for clinching an ambitious deal.Developed countries will have to set up legally bound emission targets for themselves. India and China have already announced to reduce green house gas emissions by 25 % upto 2020 which has added further momentum to the process.Allaying fears of the members in the Rajya Sabha, environment Minster Jairam Ramesh renewed the pledge of not accepting any legal binding on emission cuts. He said that New Delhi will not compromise country's national interests while negotiating in the summit.The opposition members both from the BJP and the Left charged the government of changing its stand on the crucial issue and staged a walk out in protest. AIR correspondent reports that India is hopeful that the decisions reached at the global conference will address the concerns of developing countries.The crucial negotiations are underway in the Danish capital which has been declared UN territory till the summit is over. Representatives and experts from all over the world have converged in Copenhagen to put across their points of view on this crucial issue to chart out the future course of action.The developing countries have been maintaining- given the fact that emissions from industrialised countries over the last century have been the primary cause of global warming, it is for them to shoulder greater responsibility for carbon cuts.Therefore the challenge for the conference is to strike a balance in a bid to reach consensus on the issue.The growing economies are not only facing the shortage of funds but access to the modern technology .This is proving a major hurdle in putting their mitigation plans in action.This issue has to taken on board for reaching a consensus on the issue. It is a historical occasion for the club of rich nations to rededicate themselves for the future of the planet.
