Pakistan's beleaguered Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today reached out to the opposition PML-Q in desperate attempts to save his government. The Gilani government is in trouble after key ally MQM withdrew its support from the coalition.Demand for Gilani's resignation is also increasing. The Pakistan People's Party-led federal government has been reduced to a minority, controlling around 160 seats in the 342-member national assembly, triggering a horse trading for new allies.Though the prime minister is not bound to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament, Gilani could face problems in getting crucial legislations through and may have problems even getting the budget endorsed which could force snap elections. With no headway reported yet in moves by PPP leaders including President Asif Ali Zardari to woo back MQM, Gilani telephoned PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain early this morning, reportedly to seek his support. Gilani also sought a meeting with former premier Hussain. The move assumed significance as the PPP chief and President Zardari had once alleged that PML-Q was responsible for the 2007 murder of his wife Benazir Bhutto as it had allegedly failed to provide adequate security to her.Hectic political parleys are taking place in Lahore, where Gilani is camping, in the wake of the setback suffered by the PPP.
