Ghulam Nabi seeks all party cooperation in stabilisation of population growth

The government today made a fervent appeal to political leadership irrespective of party affiliations to work towards stabilizing country's growing population. Moving a motion in the Lok Sabha, the Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, sought suggestions to frame a suitable document on population. Expressing grave concern over the increasing population and its pressure on the limited land area, the Health Minister underlined the need for launching an aggressive campaign.Quoting experts report in this regard, Mr.Azad said the country's population could have stabilized by the year 2045 had it achieved its Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of Two Point One in 2010. He, however, congratulated 14 states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which have already attained the TFR of Two Point One. He expressed serious concern over states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, whose average TFR is more than Three Point Seven.Mr. Azad said his ministry is making efforts to ensure delivery of contraceptives at the doorsteps of the people in one hundred districts to begin with. The minister underlined the need for strictly implementing the existing law providing for the marriage of a girl after attaining 18 years of age, spacing long gap between the first and the second child and educating the girl child. Initiating the discussion, Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan of the BJP said that development is the best contraceptive for controlling population. She said the government should ensure safety and security of the girl child in rural areas. The discussion is continuing till the reports last came in.
