Centre today made a fervent appeal to leadership across the political spectrum to work towards stabilizing country's growing population. Expressing grave concern over increasing population and its pressure on the limited land area, the Health and Family Welfare , Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, also sought suggestions in this regard. He ,however, said no coercive action will be taken to force the people to go for family planning.Moving a motion in Lok Sabha, on stabilisation of population in the country ,he underscored the need for launching an aggressive awareness campaign. Citing reports, Mr.Azad said the country's population could have stabilized in another 35 years, had the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) been brought down to Two Point One this year.He, however, congratulated 14 states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which have already attained the TFR of Two Point One. He expressed serious concern over states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, whose average TFR is more than 3.7. Mr. Azad said his ministry is making efforts to ensure delivery of contraceptives at the doorsteps of the people in one hundred districts to begin with.The minister underlined the need for strictly implementing the existing law providing for the marriage of a girl after attaining 18 years of age, spacing long gap between the first and the second child and educating the girl child. Initiating the discussion, Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan of the BJP said that development is the best contraceptive for controlling population. She said the government should ensure safety and security of the girl child in rural areas. The discussion is continuing till the reports last came in.
