Getting connected: Panchayats to have broadband in 2 years

All the 2, 50, 000 panchayats in the country will have broadband connectivity in two years. This was disclosed by Knowledge Commission Chairman Sam Pitroda in New Delhi on Friday. <br/> <br/>Pitroda, who is also Advisor to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovation, said 9,000 crore rupees fund required for the proposed boradband roll out, will come from the Universal Service Obligation Fund.<br/> <br/>He said India has about 10 million broadband connections and hoped the number of broadband connections will reach 100 million within five years.<br/> <br/>Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot had also recently said that the government plans to provide all village panchayats with broadband connectivity by 2012. <br/>
