Germany to enhance bilateral cooperation with India in various sectors

Germany has sought enhanced bilateral cooperation with India in various sectors including business and counter terrorism. Addressing captains of the industry in New Delhi on Tuesday, the visiting German President Mr. Horst K’hler <br/><br/>said that India and Germany have to work together in a new multipolar world for a better global governance and inclusive growth.<br/><br/>He said, due to global recession many countries have adopted protectionist tendencies but the world must continue to take decisive action to counter such tendencies.<br/><br/>Appreciating India's stand on climate change, Mr. Kohler said, the industrialised nation must work together with emerging economies to limit climate change.<br/><br/>The visiting dignitary emphasised that cooperation on renewable energy and increased energy efficiency will therefore continue to be priorities in Indo-German development cooperation.<br/><br/>Recalling the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Mr. Kohler said that the horrific act was not only directed against India but against the entire free and democratic world. He expressed his country's willingness to work together to stop repeat <br/><br/>of any such incident. <br/><br/>Talking to All India Radio the German President called India a rising star and that is why his country wants to have deeper ties with India.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the German President is believed to have discussed the proposed agreements on expanding counter-terror cooperation and economic ties including Infrastructure development, IT and renewable energy <br/><br/>during his talks with the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. <br/><br/>Though no agreement could be signed between India and Germany during this first presidential visit after 2003 as the procedures are yet to be completed, the two countries are planning to sign four agreements, including one on <br/><br/>security and counter-terrorism and another on economic and technological cooperation involving half a billion dollars.<br/><br/>The security pact envisages laying down a legal basis and framework for the training of Indians by anti-terror specialists in Germany.<br/><br/>The home ministry is examining a draft of the pact sent by German officials India and Germany are also working on the possibilities of civil nuclear cooperation. Germany supported India in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and is keen <br/><br/>to offer its expertise in nuclear security if New Delhi requests for it.<br/><br/>Germany is also India's biggest trade partner in the EU with bilateral trade estimated at over 14 billion euros which is likely to grow to 20 billion by 2012.<br/><br/>Dr. Kohler in New Delhi on a six-day state visit.
