German police on Tuesday raided the homes and a religious center of Salafi Muslim extremists suspected of working against the government. In a statement, the Interior Ministry said that the two Salafi groups, Invitation to Paradise and the Islamic Cultural Center Bremen, targeted are accused of trying to establish an Islamic religious state in Germany. The statement said it was important not to wait for a militant struggle before intervening against unconstitutional groups. Police raided targets in the western cities of Moenchengladbach, Braunschweig and Bremen. Salafism is a movement within Sunni Islam that seeks to revive a strict Muslim doctrine. The ministry said that the raids had been planned for a long time and were not related to the general terror warnings announced last month.
