Australians today voted in a general election. First woman Prime Minister Julia Gillard is pitted against her Conservative rival Tony Abbott. Polling stations were set up at nearly eight thousand locations across the country and more than 14 million people were enrolled to vote. The ruling Labour Party is hoping to win a second term on the basis of its handling of the economy but faces a tough battle against opposition conservatives. The last-minute opinion polls showed only a small gap between Gillard and Abbott.
