Gaurav Bidhuri assures India lone medal at World Championships

At the World Boxing Championships in Hamburg, India's Gaurav Bidhuri will fight his bantamweight (56kg) semifinal bout against American Duke Ragan tomorrow after today's rest day. If he wins his semi-final, he will become the first Indian boxer to win a medal better than bronze at the prestigious championships. Vikas Krishan in 2011, Vijender Singh in 2009 and Shiva Thapa in 2015 have been the country's only other medallists at the marquee event. But they all settled for bronze medals. Yesterday, the 24-year old wildcard entrant became only the fourth Indian boxer to secure himself a World Championships medal, after defeating Tunisia's Bilel Mhamdi in the quarter-finals. Gaurav is the only Indian remaining in fray now after Amit Phangal (49kg) and Kavinder Bisht (56kg) bowed out following quarterfinal losses.
