Devotees bid a tearful adieu to Lord Ganesh as the ten-day festival culminated with fanfare and immersion processions of the Ganesh idols across the nation.
In Mumbai, thousands of Ganesh Idols are being immersed at 88 key immersion points in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also has created eco friendly artificial ponds to prevent environmental pollution and facilitate smooth immersions.
The drum beats, the gulal in the air, the crowd frenzy is on as the processions wind their way throughout Mumbai city to immerse lord ganpati statues into the sea with devotion filled with fun. Several major immersion spots have been identified although the greatest crowd pullers are the beaches of Chowpatty, Dadar and Juhu.
In Nashik, amid chants, drum beats and devotional fervor, hundreds of idols were immersed at 27 different locations dotting the Godavari river. The main procession began this afternoon from Wakadi Barav locality of the Old City where city Mayor Naina Gholap-Walzade along with prominent leaders and citizens broke a coconut in front of the Nashik Municipal Corporation's Ganesh idol. Besides small domestic idols, about 300 idols of different Ganesh Mandals joined the main procession which will culminate at river Godavari by late night.
Reports are also pouring on the festivities of the last day of the Ganesh festival from across the country. Heavy security arrangements are in place for the immersion processions, still in progress in various parts of the country.
