In Gujarat, the Capital city of the State- Gandhinagar has been conferred the status of a Municipal Corporation. The State Urban Development Minister Nitin Patel made this announcement in the Assembly on Tuesday, during discussions on budgetary demands. The move follows the High Court ruling in last September on a petition filed by the Gandhinagar Shaher Jagrut Nagrik Parishad. The Gujarat High Court had ordered the state government to give the status of a municipal corporation to Gandhinagar within six months. AIR Ahmedabad correspondent reports that now Gandhinagar became eighth Municipal Corporation in the State. Interestingly, it was the only State Capital without an elected body in the country so far.
