US President Barack Obama says US forces and their allies in Afghanistan are clearing more areas under Taliban control and pushing militants from their strongholds. He however warned that the gains were still fragile. Mr. Obama was speaking at a news conference to mark the publication of a review strategy in Afghanistan. The review released by the White House said the original goal of beginning withdrawals of US soldiers in July 2011 remains viable. The assessment said that in Afghanistan, the Taliban momentum in recent years has been arrested in much of the country and reversed in some key areas, although these gains remain fragile and reversible.
